Code Pink Moment |

So what makes the Code Pink gals show up at the 2nd Annual America's Polo Cup in Loudoun County, Virgina this past Saturday?
Was it the cruel treatment of the horses? No.
Was it all the patriotism around? No.
Was it the Marine performance? Not this time.
Was it the event's unique sense of fashion? Not a chance -- there was pink everywhere.
Was it the 58 year old eighties rock n' roll sensation making a comeback?
or his use of the Flux Capicitor as an alternative energy source? No.
It turns out the pre-match, half-time, and post-match entertainment included the BlackwaterUSA parachute performance team. Apparently they're war profiteers.
And before long the sheriff ushered them away.

"Killing Rommel" by Steven Pressfield |

8:56 AM |
After a review of the week's event with Fred Barnes and Morton Kondracke and a report from Congressman John Campbell on the paralysis in the House, I will air an interview I conducted earlier this week with author Steven Pressfield, best known for his novels of the ancient world including Gates of Fire, but who has now written an extraordinary novel of war set in the North African campaign of 1940 to 1943, Killing Rommel.

I am certain you will love the book, and especially so if you are a member of the military who has served in one of the desert wars of the past 15 years. Pressfield has an uncanny eye for geography and a great feel for the life and calling of a special forces soldier (he was a Marine reservist which helps of course.) The transcript and audio of the interview will be posted later today, and Pressfield made this introductory video on Rommel and the Long Range Desert Group that the British used along with the SAS to harry, pursue and collect intelligence on Rommel in what was really the birth of special forces in modern war:

Iran Is Killing American Troops |

I conducted a lengthy interview with major General Rick Lynch, commander of the 3rd Infantry Division yesterday. The transcript is here. The audio is here.
The enormous progress that the surge has brought to Iraq is detailed by the general, but so was Iran's continued operations inIraq, operations that kill Americans:
You see, what we’re trying to do, Hugh, is to trace the rat line back where it came from. See, I’ve lost 147 soldiers under my command since I’ve been here in the last fourteen months. Many of those soldiers were killed by explosive foreign penetrators that are all traced back to Iran, or by Iranian rockets. So what we do, in everything that we do, for example, we found so many weapons caches over the course of the last month, and in those weapons caches we found Iranian rockets and Iranian mines. So we’ve got detailed biometrics. We check for fingerprints, and we traced those back to where they started. We’re following the money back to Iran, we’re following the munitions back to Iran, and then looking for those people that are trained in Iran as well. So it’s a major piece of our operations, to block that Iranian influence.

General Petraeus, General Odierno and "War and Decision" |

The announcement of the promotions of General Petraeus and General Odierno is a double dose of excellent news. The Senate should move swiftly to confirm these two extraordinary leaders.
Today I am airing an interview with former Undersecretary of Defense Douglas Feith on his memoir of the first four years of the war as seen from the office of the third highest civilian in the Pentagon, War and Decision: Inside the Pentagon at the Dawn of the War on Terrorism. I taped the interview on Monday for use today while the studio is being upgraded, so while we do discuss General Petraeus, we won't be discussing the news of his and General Odierno's promotions. But the conversation could not be more timely. In this detailed, compelling and persuasive memoir, Feith makes clear again and again that the senior leadership of the American military is every bit as extraordinary as the young men and women at the tip of the spear. From this already incredibly gifted set of professionals have emerged two men who are exactly the right men for the right jobs at the right moment.
The professional military is not political, and the debate over the war should not carry over into partisan obstruction of the promotions of these men. Senators Clinton and Obama could lead the way by calling for quick hearings. Any delay in confirming them would be a great shame on the Senate.

Mark Metherell, RIP |

3:29 PM |
I learned this morning that an extraordinary American died in Iraq last week.
Mark Metherell was a Wheaton graduate, a former Navy SEAL, and a civilian training the Iraqi Security Forces when the evil guys got him and his trainees in an IED attack in Baghdad.
I have met some of Metherell's extended family over the years in Orange County, california. He is part of an extraordinary band of servant leaders, and his commitment to the new Iraq does not surprise given the family in which he was raised. He was a graduate of Wheaton College, and at the memorial site his friends have created for his wife and little girl, his platoon commander from SEAL Team Five has written a memorial that you ought to read.
It is so obvious from the memorial site that Mark Metherell was back in Iraq because he loved the Iraqi people and wanted them to remain free. He is an example of the very best that our country produces, and the piece by Michael Yon in Friday's Wall Street Journal on the extraordinary progress being made in Iraq is a testament to the significance of the sacrifice made by Mark Metherell and his family.

Iran and the Campaign |
|

9:22 AM |
Yesterday I interviewed AEI's Michael Rubin on Iran's "special groups" in Iraq as well as the fanatical regime's resolute pursuit of nukes. The transcript is here.
We talked about how the presidential campaign simply ignores the looming crisis with Iran, and the probability that Iran will attempt to influence the result of the U.S. presidential election via a Tet-like offensive in Iraq in the fall:
HH: I’m joined by Michael Rubin, who I think ought to be one of the most featured guests on the television and radio, because Iran ought to be at the center of this election, ought to be at the center of all of our conversations. But unfortunately he’s not, because we’re sleepwalking through this election. Michael Rubin, are you amazed at the lack of conversation about Iran in the political arena?
MR: I am. A lot of the discussion about Iran is really less about Iran, and more about inside the Beltway politics, which is very, very dangerous, because the Iranian threat is growing, and the nuance is important....
HH: Does Iran follow our politics to the extent that they believe that John McCain is a menace to them, and they will do what they can to get him elected, do you think?
MR: They will do what they can to hurt John McCain ahead of the election.
HH: That’s what I meant, yeah.
MR: The Iranians are extremely sophisticated.
HH: And so do you think that means a Tet-like offensive in Baghdad and around as we get close to the election in November?
MR: I believe that there will be an upsurge in violence for two reasons. One is that, and the second is that while it’s not on the headlines now, there’s supposed to be the provincial elections in October, which will be too tempting a target for the Iranians. It will be coming just a month before the U.S. elections.

"Cheney On The Warpath Again?" |
|
Posted by:
Hugh Hewitt at
2:54 PM |
I interviewed Vice President Cheney on yesterday's program (transcript here; audio here.)
One of the Washington Post's hard-core lefties, Dan Froomkin, managed to turn the conversation into a near-declaration of war:
Vice President Cheney went on right-wing talk radio yesterday with a dramatic new argument for preventing Iran from getting nuclear weapons, casting the Iranian leadership as apocalyptic zealots who yearn for a nuclear conflagration.
Cheney also notably refused to comment about any recent conversations he may have had with Israeli leaders about the possibility of their bombing Iranian nuclear facilities. Some observers suspect Cheney of encouraging Israel to attack Iran as a proxy. Read the whole thing. Must have been a slow news day.
